James Smith, son of Samuel Smith and Mary Ensign, was born June 12, 1675, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.  James, when he was 23, married October 26, 1698, in East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut, Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Ensign Chileab Smith and Hannah Hitchcock. Chileab and his wife are buried in Hadley, Hampshire, Connecticut.
    Their Epitaph
   “ Ensign Chileab SMITH d. 7 Mar 1731, ae 96 yrs & Hannah, his wife, d. 31 Aug 1733, ae 88 yrs. "It is worthy of    memory that they lived in Marrage state 70 yrs."”
   James and Elizabeth lived in Northhampton then of Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts till 1706 then moved to East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut. Elizabeth was born February 02, 1679, in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts and died May 05, 1749, in East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut, aged 70. At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of Suffield September 21, 1722, it was voted that James Smith Senior, do take his seat in ye 4th seat and the meeting was adjourned to Monday the first day of October, at one of ye clock in the Afternoon.
   James and Elizabeth had eight children Elizabeth, James, Noah, Samuel, Chileab, Hannah, Ebenezer, and Mindwell Smith.

Elizabeth Smith, daughter of James Smith and Elizabeth Smith, was born July 26, 1699, in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

James Smith, son of James Smith and Elizabeth Smith, was born December 30, 1700, in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

Noah Smith, son of James Smith and Elizabeth Smith, was born August 24, 1702, in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts and died on May 18, 1769. Noah married Experience Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary Younglove, on March 22, 1720, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut. Experience was born on February 5, 1701, in Suffield, Hampshire, Massachusetts and died in 1756.
  Note: Experience on her death bed co-signed a deed with Mary Smith dated 6 Feb 1755 granting 6 acres which had belonged to their father Thomas Smith to Charles Granger -- see Suffield Deeds, Book 1:350.

    Sarah Smith was born February 3, 1722, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut.

Miriam Smith was born December 2, 1723, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut and died March 21, 1724, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut.

Experience Smith was born July 18, 1725, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut. Experience married Cephas Kent, son of John Kent and Mary Smith, in 1744/1745. Cephas was born April 13, 1725, in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut and died December 5, 1809, in Dorset, Bennington, Vermont. Cephas is buried in Dorset, Bennington, Vermont, Mary Smith the mother of Cephas Kent is the daughter of Samuel Smith and Joanna McLathlin.
   Cephas married second Hannah Spencer on May 20, 1747 in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut. Cephas and Hannah had ten children.
